Job Description
RN, Nurse Manager - Emergency Department

This NurseManagerposition is in the Emergency Department for the Amarillo VA Health Care System in Amarillo, Texas.

As the Nurse Manager, you will be responsible for the organization and administration of patient care and staff development programs in the Emergency Department. You will have 24-hour responsibility for the care of Medical and Psychiatric patients in the ED.He/she is responsible to ensure that the highest possible quality of care is achieved and that a safe, therapeutic environment is provided in the ED.Duties and responsibilities include, but not limited to the following:

  • Directly supervises and manages the ED nursing personnel.
  • Provides oversight and ongoing education to departments and ancillary services on ED processes and procedures.
  • Develops, implement, and oversee processes on a daily basis to provide efficient and effective ED nursing care.
  • Plans 24-hour staffing based on fluctuating needs and staffing mix to maximize cost effectiveness.
  • Initiates quality improvement activities and ongoing improvement activities.
  • Ensures effective communication of up-to-date information within the ED and across departments to encourage teamwork, safe patient transitions, and hand-offs.
  • Oversees policies and procedures related to nursing practice for direct reports.
  • Plans, assigned work to be accomplished by subordinates, setting priorities, and preparing schedules for completion of work.
  • Leads task force groups and committees that address issues concerning nursing ED standards of care, processes, performance improvement initiatives, and quality of care issues.
  • Provides supervisory guidance and evaluation of staff performance. Provides ongoing evaluation of ED services.
  • Coordinates recurring and non-recurring statistical reports to presentation to clinical service and/or management including collection of data, performing analysis, and displaying outcomes.
  • Plans, implements and evaluates programs designed to improve services to patients which are based on current emergency care practice.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 07:30 AM - 4:00 PM. Work may include Evenings, Nights, Callbacks, Weekends and/or Holidays.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
  • U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. *The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6).
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration (licensure)as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

    GRADE DETERMINATIONS:The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:

    • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, no experience.
    • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and no experience; or a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) and no experience.
    • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of experience; or a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of experience, or a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no experience.
    • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years experience or a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience.
    • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years experience.

    PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

    • At least 5 years of current, full-time RN experience in an ED setting including charge nurse responsibilities.
    • At least 3 years of recent RN experience in a leadership role i.e. Assistant Nurse Manager, project lead, supervisor, Acting Nurse Manager etc.
    • At least 2 years of recent RN managerial experience.
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from one of the following providers: American Heart Association-Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers or the Military Training Network (MTN) Provider Certificate/Card.
    • Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification from American Heart Association.
    • Excellent skills in interpersonal relations with the healthcare team and general public; strong family advocate.
    • Documentation of successful program development and/or strategic planning.
    • Documentation of successful experience in working with an interdisciplinary healthcare team to achieve both short and long-term goals and objectives.
    • Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and expected outcomes.
    • Demonstrated excellent interdisciplinary skills, writing skills, team building and ability to work with diverse groups of people.

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
