Job Description
Food Service Worker

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Incumbent prepares simple food items such as a thickened liquids, salads, toast and sandwiches.
  • Prepares and pours coffee, tea and juices.
  • Properly labels, dates and stores food following standard practices, washes, peels, chops, cuts and dices foods.
  • Incumbent must be able to read, write, count and follow oral and written instruction, present a neat appearance and follow sanitary practices for food handlers.
  • Select the correct food item to correspond to diet orders and menu and must be able to distinguish between regular diet and modified diet foods.
  • Routinely washes, peels, chops, cuts and dices food.
  • Plates cold salads and desserts and portions ready-to-serve food into serving dishes and replenishes as necessary.
  • Uses recipes and follows directions to assembly chef's salads ingredients, make gelatin salads and desserts.
  • Delivers and sets up steam table, passes trays to rooms or tables.
  • Picks up soiled trays from rooms and tables.

This position involves a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed above represent the full performance level of WG-03. At the WG-01 grade level, the incumbent will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. Incumbent will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of WG-03. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and it is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher level work, and availability of funds.

Work Schedule: 6:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. OR 10:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Work schedules include evenings, callbacks, weekends and/or holidays.

Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.

Your background must demonstrate experience in a variety of Food Service Worker duties, such as experience with tasks such asprepping, serving,handling liquids, disposal of garbage, general cleaning and sanitizing duties, replenishing dishes, and other supplies, proper customer service in the food industry.


EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume or OF-612. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C ( www.opm.gov/qualifications/x-118c ).
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.


SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the questions. The screen-out element for this position is: Abilityto do the workof a Food Service Worker without more than normal supervision.


JOB ELEMENTS: Those who meet the minimum level of experience and training for the screen-out element will then be evaluated in each of the following job elements:
- Work practices (including keeping things neat, clear, and in order).
- Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic).
- Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (other than blueprints).
- Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
-Knowledge of Materials.

- Dexterity andsafety.

PHYSICAL EFFORT/WORK CONDITIONS: The job requires moderate physical effort in the following: Frequently lifting or moving objects of moderate weight. Occasionally lifting up to 40 pounds. Constant standing and walking, bending and pushing or pulling of food carts.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Steam and heat from cooking and dish washing often cause uncomfortable high temperatures. The area is usually noisy and there is danger of slipping on floor where food or beverages have been dropped. Incumbent may be exposed to extreme temperatures of the hot kitchen and the cold walk-in refrigerators. Incumbent is also subject to skin irritations due to prolonged submission of hands and forearms in water and detergents.
