Job Description
Research Health Science Specialist

NOTE: This is a TERM appointment not-to-exceed 4 Years (may be extended up to 4 years). Term appointments are non-status, nonpermanent appointments of limited duration. Term employees are eligible to earn leave and generally have the same benefits as permanent employees including health and life insurance, within-grade increases and Federal Employees Retirement System and Thrift Savings Plan coverage. Term appointments may be extended without further competition.

NOTE: This is a part-time position (25 hours/week). The salary listed represents full-time employment and will be pro-rated based on the actual number of hours worked each pay-period. Likewise, benefits and time-off accrual will also be prorated and based on your part-time work schedule.

This position is located at the VA Medical Center in Bronx, NY. The Research Health Science Specialist on the faculty of the VISN 2 South MIRECC where, as a Co-Investigator or Principal Investigator, responsible for development and implementation of protocols for studies with vulnerable populations (e.g., Veterans with serious mental illness). The incumbent will be able to perform the duties of the position with little to no supervision. Related duties are, but not limited to the following:

  • Performs research related duties such as determining eligibility for study participation, implementing study interventions, collecting relevant information, coordinating treatment activities with other clinicians and family members, and educating patients and members.
  • Develop new proposals and protocols in response to announcements (e.g., from VA HSRD, RRD& NIMH) of opportunities for research funding.
  • Conducts original research with focus on neuro-cognition as a critical dimension that is directly associated with disease risk and outcome and to attempt to identify the clinical and molecular factors that underlie cognitive impairment in patients with schizophrenia and other severe psychopathology.
  • Develops and presents publications and presentations of study findings.
  • Collaborates with clinicians and other health services research personnel inside and outside of the service network.
  • Trains Research Assistants to screen and evaluate candidates for clinical studies, using objective rating techniques to identify potential candidates for participation in study.
  • Utilizes knowledge of a variety of clinical problems and factors associated with outcomes to develop and conduct clinical research and quality assurance activities. This knowledge may include expertise in risk clinical factors, specifically biomarkers and behavioral factors that predict cognitive and functional outcome in major psychiatric disorders.
  • Exercises judgment in selecting the appropriate study focus and methods when guidelines such as accepted professional standards and ethics; JCAHO requirements; agency regulations; or when guidance from relevant scientific literature is sparse, contradictory, or unconvincing due to methodological limitations.
  • Utilizes state-of-the-art technology (e.g., using active-play video games), along with in-session monitoring of interventions fidelity (e.g., continuous heart rate to collect data in research studies.

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in an academic field related to the health sciences (or allied sciences) appropriate to the work of this position as a Health Science Specialist. "Major field of study" is considered to be 24 semester hours. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED - If you do not submit a copy of your transcript, your application may not be processed.)

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE AT THE GS-13 LEVEL: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in federal service. Specialized experience includes: experience performing research related duties such as determining eligibility for study participation, implementing study interventions, collecting relevant information, coordinating treatment activities with other clinicians and family members, and educating patients and members; Conducting original research with focus on neuro-cognition as a critical dimension that is directly associated with disease risk and outcome and to attempt to identify the clinical and molecular factors that underlie cognitive impairment in patients with schizophrenia and other severe psychopathology; Collaborating with clinicians and other health services research personnel inside and outside of the service network; Training Research Assistants to screen and evaluate candidates for clinical studies, using objective rating techniques to identify potential candidates for participation in study; Utilizing state-of-the-art technology (e.g., using active-play video games), along with in-session monitoring of interventions fidelity (e.g., continuous heart rate to collect data in research studies.
