Job Description
Dentist (Chief, Dental Service)

Demonstrates outstanding ability in the field of general dentistry or a dental specialty to independently perform the duties related to various professional activities of patient care and treatment. In addition to meeting the basic dental requirements, applicants must demonstrate ability to oversee and maintain accepted standards of professional care in VA facilities, and accept full responsibility for the proper care and treatment of patients. Demonstrate ability to guide the development and implementation of programs within their respective domain. These would include, but are not limited to dental practice, professional standards, personnel issues, quality and performance improvement.


Ability to train residents assigned to the service and support attending dentists in teaching and supervising residents and students in the provision of dental treatment for Veterans. Capable of giving authoritative views and opinions on subjects in dentistry. Broad administrative or professional experience with the ability to give advice of distinctive value. Participate in all administrative requirements of medical staff members, including but not limited to: mandatory training; attendance on medical center committees; and computer and privacy compliance.

Duties are as follows but are not limited to:

  • Chairside clinical dentistry
  • Supervise dental hygienists, staff dentist, and laboratory technicians within service
  • Employee relations
  • Recruitment
  • Medical record documentation reviews for FPPE and OPPE
  • Consult management
  • Eligibility determination
  • Leave administration
  • Purchase card approving official
  • Performance appraisals and competencies
  • Proficiency reports

Basic Requirements:

  • U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of dental surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
    (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.
    (2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
      • Completion of an approved residency program, in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Physical requirements outlined below.

    Preferred Experience: Supervisory experience is preferred but not required

    Manager/Supervisor. A dentist assigned to a managerial or supervisory position. Dental leadership positions are called Directors, Service Chiefs, Assistant Chiefs, Section Chiefs, and/or Lead Dentists. In addition to meeting the basic requirements, Managerial/Supervisory Dentists must demonstrate the following:

    (a) Outstanding professional ability in the practice of dentistry or a dental specialty;

    (b) Ability to guide the development and implementation of programs within their respective domain. These would include, but are not limited to dental practice, professional standards, personnel issues, quality and performance improvement.




    Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements: The work is usually sedentary, but it requires periods of walking, standing, bending, or climbing and employee may carry light items such as books, instruments, lap tops and other similar materials. The candidate selected may need to successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination prior to appointment.

Participation in the seasonal influenza program is a condition of employment and a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP). HCP are individuals who, during the influenza season, work in VHA locations where patients receive care or who come into contact with VA patients as part of their duties. VHA locations include, but are not limited to, VA hospitals and associated clinics, community living centers (CLCs), community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs), domiciliary units, Vet centers and VA-leased facilities. HCP include all VA licensed and unlicensed, clinical and administrative, paid and unpaid, full- and part-time employees, intermittent employees, fee basis employees, VA contractors, students, researchers, volunteers, and trainees who work at these facilities.
