Job Description
Histopathology Technician/Autopsy Assistant

This position is to perform, evaluate and monitor the accessioning, processing, embedding, cutting, staining, including special stains, cover slipping and labeling tissue specimens. The incumbent is responsible for performing professional and non-professional duties as assigned and serves as an autopsy assistant to the pathologists, pathology specialist or pathology residents.

Major duties and responsibilities include:

  • Identifies tissue specimens as to type and origin
  • Serves as an autopsy assistant to the pathologists, pathology specialist or pathology residents.
  • Performprocessing of histology specimens

  • Decontaminates, wash and sterilize items from the autopsy room laboratory section
  • Utilizes various computer programs to record daily workload for the anatomic pathology section and assist in maintaining clean work areas in histology and cytology
  • PerformsH & E and special stainsprotocol per SOP as requested by staff pathologists
  • Performs standardized procedures and accept or reject slides on the basis of the proper quality control staining reactions.

Specialized Experience:

For positions at GS-4 and above: Anatomical pathology technician work in (a)cutting and staining very thin sections of human tissue specimens for microscopic examination; and/or in (b)testing and examining body fluids, etc. for abnormalities in cell structure, depending upon the requirements of the position to be filled.

OR

Possess successfully completed one (1) full year of graduate education or internship that is directly related to the work of the position to meet the requirements of this position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Time-in-grade: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05 level.
