Job Description
Supervisory Interior Designer

This position serves as a Supervisory Interior Designer within the Environmental Management Service of the James J. Peters VA Medical Center in Bronx, New York.

Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing complete, from concept to installation, interior design services for the organization and its satellite facilities;
  • Providing plans, consultation, advice, specifications and designs for virtually all spaces involved in new construction or renovation;
  • Developing and maintaining a schedule of short- and long-range interior improvement projects for the facility through the five-year interior design plan and other programs to identify existing and future project needs;
  • Originating orders for furnishings, window treatments, patient cubicle curtains, wall coverings, floor coverings, wall art, lighting, ceiling treatments, casework and other interior design accoutrements; and
  • Effectively utilizing an interior design budget in recurring funds and budgeting projects that may involve millions of dollars in non-recurring funds.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday; 8:00am to 4:30pm.

To qualify for this position at the GS-11 level, you must meet one of the following:

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
You must have one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-9) in the Federal Service, that required the performance of work concerned with the design and alteration of interior spaces to meet functional and aesthetic needs such as:

  • Identifying, researching, and creatively solving problems pertaining to the function and quality of the interior environment.
  • Performing services relative to interior spaces, including programming, design analysis, space planning and aesthetics, using specialized knowledge of interior construction, building systems and components, building codes, equipment, materials, and furnishings.
  • Preparing drawings and documents relative to the design of interior spaces in order to enhance and protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public.
  • Coordinating and integrating the mechanical, electrical, and structural engineering disciplines within the interior context.
  • Managing projects, developing cost estimates, evaluating bid proposals, reviewing construction documents, participating in on-site construction visits, conducting pre- and post-occupancy evaluations, developing standards for efficient space management, etc.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE:
You must have successfully completed 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. Education must include a major study in interior design or another field that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in interior design, interior architecture, or interior environmental design.

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
You must have an equivalent combination of creditable specialized experience and graduate education (beyond the second year) as described above to meet the total requirements for the position.

CERTIFCATION:
You must have successfully passed the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) examination.

NOTE: If attempting to qualify based on passage of the NCIDQ exam, you must submit a copy of your certification with your application. Certification cannot be credited without documentation.

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
