Job Description
Staff Psychologist, Home Based Primary Care

The Clinical Psychologist position is falls under the Home Based Primary Care unit of Extended Care and RehabilitationService Line. Travelingis required to complete home visits, which consist ofproviding direct evaluation, treatment and consultation services.

The following duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

* Integrates within Home Based Primary Care (HBPC) team and works closely in collaboration with the teams. Applies principals of population based care (defines role and identifies problems rapidly).

* Provides psychological service delivery for a wide range of behavioral concerns and resolving problems as part of the HBPC multidisciplinary care team. Behavioral health visits are provided in the home of the veteran, structured so that the patient views meeting with the behavioral health provider as a routine home based primary care service.

* Provides care via face-to-face interactions, and when clinically appropriate via tele audio and video modalities of care. Uses time-limited, evidence based, interventions that are simple and concrete.

* Provides diagnostic and functional assessment, and triage, brief intervention, education and consultative services regarding a wide range of mental health and behavioral medicine concerns, on referral from the HBPC provider.

* Provides education on behavioral issues as well as consultation on tips for successful care management and patient facilitation, even when no direct patient contact.

* Completes required clinical and administrative documentation in a timely manner and in accord with governing regulations.

* Participates in support of Psychology administrative and performance improvement activities.

  • Provides behavioral medicine interventions (including but not limited to tobacco cessation, alcohol misuse, weight management, pain management, end of life issues, and coping with chronic illness).
  • Routinely provides feedback toother team members same day as referral.
  • Triages appropriately and efficiently to specialty mental health services.

Basic Requirements:

The basic requirements for employment as a VHA psychologist are prescribed by: Public Law 96-151 codified in Title 38, U.S.C. 7402. To qualify for appointment, all applicants for the position of psychologist in VHA must meet the following:

  • Citizenship: Citizen of the United States.(Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualifiedUS citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part
  • Education: Have a doctoral degree in psychology from a graduate program in psychology accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA), the Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System (PCSAS), or the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) at the time the program was completed. The specialty area of the degree must be consistent with the assignment for which the applicant is to be employed.OR Have a doctoral degree in any area of psychology and, in addition, successfully complete a respecialization program (including documentation of an approved internship completed as part of the respecialization program) meeting both of the following conditions:the respecialization program must be completed in an APA or a CPA accredited doctoral program; and the specialty in which the applicant is retrained must be consistent with the assignment for which the applicant is to be employed.
  • Internship: Have successfully completed a professional psychology internship training program that has been accredited by APA. Exceptions: (1) new VHA psychology internship programs that are in the process of applying for APA accreditation are acceptable in fulfillment of the internship requirement, provided that such programs were sanctioned by the VHA Central Office Program Director for Psychology and the VHA Central Office of Academic Affiliations at the time that the individual was an intern and (2) VHA facilities who offered full one-year pre-doctoral internships prior to PL96-151 (pre-1979) are considered to be acceptable in fulfillment of the internship requirement. Applicants who completed an internship that was not accredited by APA or CPA at the time the program was completed may be considered eligible for hire only if they are currently board certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology in a specialty area that is consistent with the assignment for which the applicant is to be employed.
  • Licensure Hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States (e.g., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia.
  • Experience: At at least 1 additional year of experience as a psychologist equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-12).

NOTE: The Professional Standards Board (a peer-review group) will review the selected candidate's education and experience and recommend the step at which the candidate will be placed in that specific grade. The salary is based on the grade and step approved for the selected candidate.

Physical Requirements: Applicants must be able to perform the duties of a Psychologist. Moderate lifting (15-44 pounds); moderate carrying (15-44 pounds); both hands required; both legs required; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; hearing (aid permitted); and emotional stability.
