Job Description
Physician Pain Clinic

The Iowa City Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center is seeking a dynamicPhysicianto serve in the Pain Management Clinic. As part of the Extended Care and Rehabilitation department, this provider willwork closely within anInterdisciplinary Pain Team toprovided patient-centered biopsychosocial care and education. The multidisciplinary pain team includes a nurse practitioner, pain psychologist, nurse care coordinator, and physical therapist who provide comprehensive pain management to veterans with complex pain. Treatment plans focus on quality of life and emphasize function and rehabilitation.

Asa Physician in the Pain Management Clinic you will be responsible and accountable for, but not limited to the following:

  • The delivery of Veteran-centered, high quality and high value care. You will continuously monitor and improve Veterans access to care in the organization.
  • Focus on treatment plans that provide a high quality of life and emphasize function and rehabilitation.
  • Being an active participant and facilitate clarification and the development of patient and family goals of care.
  • Full and appropriate documentation of patients care services to support professional billing for these services.
  • Weekly participation in interdisciplinary team meetings to review active cases.
  • Maintain and promote high ethical, clinical and administrative standards.
  • Develop and provide education to Iowa City staff and coworkers.
  • Adhere to the practice of confidentiality regarding patients, families, staff, and the organization.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Candidates for this position may come from a variety of backgrounds including internal medicine, family practice, osteopathic medicine, behavioral health, or other specialty area.

Work Schedule: Primarily clinical administrative, Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm

Basic Requirements:
  • Citizenship of the United States. Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with Department of Veterans Affairs policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Preferred Experience:

  • Strong communication skills and experience working with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Must have demonstrated a high level quality of practice using evidence based medicine principles involving patients who have complex illnesses.
  • Experience treating chronic pain patients.
  • Board certified/Board eligible in pain management.

Physical Requirements:Applicant must meet the physical standards established for this position. The physical requirements of this position may include the following tasks which may be performed intermittently: moderate lifting (15-44 lbs); moderate carrying (15-44 lbs); reaching above shoulders; use of fingers; walking (up to 6 hours); standing (up to 2 hours); near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and 20/40 in the other; hearing aid permitted; mental and emotional stability required.
