Senior Building Engineer-LIS Specialist
JOB SUMMARY  

Perform scheduled services and advanced level troubleshooting/service of unscheduled work on specialty equipment, instruments and systems specific to the pharmaceutical research & development industry.  Possess in-depth technical knowledge requirements for performing complex analytical service procedures, instrument qualifications and calibration tasks.


 ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSBILITIES


Performs or oversees any in-house services required for instruments that are not currently covered by existing standard operating procedures/guidelines. 

 

Documents all work performed to ensure compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Good Lab Practices (GLP) and other applicable regulations.

 

Recognizes out of tolerance conditions and initiate corrective action and documentation.

 

May provide daily direction and guidance to LIS Technicians. 

 

Performs calibration and functional checks using a combination of chemical, mechanical and electronic standards.

 

Provides training for service staff in regards to servicing of specialized instrumentation

 

Develops appropriate methods, sequences, hyper-sequences and setups to test specific equipment functionality, making modifications and adjustments as necessary.

 

Prepares chemical test standards according to applicable Standard Reference Material publications (NIST or equivalent).  Monitor standard viability and initiate corrective actions based on analytical evaluations.

 

Performs advanced level repairs/upgrades/troubleshooting beyond what is accomplished during a routine calibration or preventive maintenance or service.

 

Makes financial evaluations for the customer as it relates to determining whether to use in-house service versus bringing in original equipment manufacturer billable service providers.

 

Differentiates between mechanical malfunctions of equipment and user misapplications including solvent miscibility issues, incorrectly programmed analyses, and incorrect configurations.

 

Performs modifications to analytical equipment to make them more compatible with specific user defined applications.

 

Develops and writes instrument procedures relating to calibration, calibration limits and interval assessment, preventive maintenance or other documentation for pharmaceutical research and development analytical services.

 

Records and reports abnormal function of equipment or out of tolerance conditions and initiates corrective action.

 

Assists in evaluating cost saving opportunities via internalization of tasks, part reconditioning, and changing vendors.

 

Locates part sources, estimates costs and prepares requisitions.

 

Communicates with customer staff and outside contractors in the calibration, repair and operation of equipment necessary and coordinates with outside contractors regarding repairs covered by maintenance agreements.

 

Provides field training and trains customer base on methods to better utilize their equipment.

 

Acts as local LIS subject matter expert.

 

Complies with company policies and procedures and adheres to company standards.

 

Performs work in accordance with approved equipment calibration, maintenance and safety procedures.

 

Performs other duties as required.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBLITIES

No formal supervisory responsibilities in this position.  Provides informal assistance such as technical guidance, and/or training to coworkers.  May coordinate and assign tasks to co-workers within a work unit and/or project.



QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

Associate degree in electronics, metrology, instrumentation, or related scientific or technology field with 8+ years of relevant experience or Bachelors degree in Electrical or Chemical Engineering or related scientific field with 3 years experience.

 

Must have expert knowledge, training and experience related to specific analytical instrumentation classes to include selected technique groups such as HPLC, GC, Liquid Handling, Automation, Optical Systems, Biology and Chemistry Analyzers.  To include a thorough understanding and ability to operate all related operating and data acquisition software.

 

Working knowledge of computers and use of scientific notation.

 

Working understanding of FDA regulations, GMPs, and GLPs.

 

Must be physically able to perform basic maintenance tasks to the highest caliber, which includes ability to lift objects weighting up to 50 lbs.

 

Requires experience specific to the pharmaceutical industry R&D.

 

May require the making of chemical standards using appropriate techniques for weighing, pipetting, mixing, diluting, and verifying concentrations.

 

CERTIFICATES and/or LICENSES


Must have appropriate license or certification where required by law.

 
COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Ability to comprehend and interpret instructions, short correspondence, and memos and ask clarifying questions to ensure understanding. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from clients, co-workers, and/or supervisor.

 
FINANCIAL KNOWLEDGE

Ability to calculate simple figures such as percentages.

 
REASONING ABILITY

Must posses critical thinking skills using logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions and approaches to problems.

 

Must posses problem solving skills and be able to identify problems and review related information to develop and evaluate options and offer/implement solutions.

 

Must posses judgement and decision making skills and be able to consider the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one. 

 

OTHER SKILLS and/or ABILITIES


Uses personal computer and / or PDA for work order system, email, ESS and training. Basic skills with Microsoft Office Outlook. Physical requirements include stooping, standing, walking, climbing stairs / ladders and ability to lift / carry heavy loads of 50 lbs. or more. 

 
Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Decisions made with in-depth understanding and interpretation of procedures, company policies and business practices to achieve general results.  Responsible for setting department deadlines.  Errors in judgement may cause long-term impact to co-workers, supervisors, department and/or line of business.
