Job Description
Social Worker - DRRTP

The incumbent of this position will be belong to the Behavioral Health CareLine located at the Bath VA Medical Center in Bath, NY. The duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Independently performs case finding functions and outreach, identified and screens patients for psychosocial needs. Must possess the knowledge and ability to independently implement treatment modalities and provide counseling or psychotherapy for individuals, families, and groups at the appropriate level of licensure and within current scope of practice.
  • Coordinates community-based services, including information and referral for additional services from other VA programs, other government programs, and community agency programs.Incumbent does this in providing care management as part of the discharge planning.
  • Independently identifies high-risk patients and provides case management services. Provides crisis intervention services, addressing the cause as well as the presenting complaint. Coordinates family conferences and serves as the liaison to family members.
  • Has working knowledge and experience with common medication and their effects/side effects, medical terminology, medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities and treatment procedures to include acute, chronic and traumatic illnesses/injuries.
  • Possesses general knowledge of Veterans' benefits and services relating to special programs to include service connected compensation and non-service connected pension. Facilitates referrals based on Veterans' needs and eligibility.
  • Has the ability to complete social work Comp and Pen exams.
  • Conducts interviews or observes the patient to assess emotional, functional, or psychological condition. Employs professional maturity in using interview, observation, personal histories, and other measurement devices in the assessment of a diverse group of clients
  • Works with veterans with legal matters, such as DWI.
  • Transports patients to appointments and meetings as needed using a government vehicle.
  • Other duties as assigned, including Social Work coverage within and across care lines as needed.

Schedule: Full-time.Tour of duty will include evenings, weekends, and holidays. Schedule to be discussed at interview.

Salary:$60,210- 78,270.Salary to be determined by a Professional Standards Board (peer-to-peer review)based on applicant's education and qualifications.


BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be a United States Citizen
  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English
  • Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
  • Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level.
  • Must possess a valid, unrestricteddriver's license.

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates.

GS-9 Social Worker

GS-9 is the entry level grade for the GS-185 social work series and who are licensed or certified in a state at the independent practice level. In addition, the candidates must demonstrate the Knowledge, Skills and Abilities below and to provide a written narrative summary:

(1) Ability to provide psychosocial treatment to a wide variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, ethnic, educational, and other diversified backgrounds. This requires knowledge of human development and behavior (physical and psychological), and the differential influences of the environment, society, and culture.

(2) Ability to work with patients and families who are experiencing a variety of psychiatric, medical, and social problems utilizing individual, group, and family counseling skills. Work with more complex problems is done under close supervision. With guidance from the social work supervisor, ability to assess the psychosocial functioning and needs of patients and their family members, and to formulate and implement a treatment plan, identifying the patient's problems, strengths, weaknesses, coping skills, and assistance needed.

(3) Basic knowledge of psychosocial treatment modalities and, under supervision, ability to implement treatment modalities in working with individuals, families, and groups to achieve treatment goals. This requires judgment and skill in utilizing supportive, problem solving, or crisis intervention techniques.

(4) Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, staff, and representatives of community agencies. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with people from varied backgrounds.

(5) Knowledge of medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities, and treatment procedures. This includes acute, chronic, and traumatic illnesses/injuries; common medications and their effects/side effects; and medical terminology.

(6) Basic skill in the use of computer software applications for drafting documents, data management, and tracking. Ability to learn and utilize software programs in use by VHA.FACTOR: AREA OF CONSIDERATION

GS-11 Social Worker

Appointment to the GS-11 full performance level requires completion of a minimum of 1 year of post-MSW degree experience in the field of clinical or health care social work (VA or non-VA experience) and licensure or certification in a state at the independent practice level.

OR

In addition to meeting basic requirements, a doctoral degree in social work from a school of social work may be substituted for the required 1 year of professional social work experience in a clinical setting. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the KSAs below.

1. Knowledge of community resources, how to make appropriate referrals to community and other governmental agencies for services, and ability to coordinate services.

2. Ability to independently assess the psychosocial functioning and needs of patients and their family members and to formulate and implement a treatment plan, identifying the patient's problems, strengths, weaknesses, coping skills and assistance needed, in collaboration with the patient, family and interdisciplinary treatment team.

3. Ability to independently conduct psychosocial assessments and provide psychosocial treatment to a wide variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, ethnic, educational and other diversified backgrounds. This requires knowledge of human development and behavior (physical and psychological) and the differential influences of the environment, society and culture.

4. Knowledge and experience in the use of medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities and treatment procedures. This includes acute, chronic and traumatic illnesses/injuries, common medications and their effects/side effects, and medical terminology.

5. Knowledge of psychosocial treatment and ability to independently

implement treatment modalities in working with individuals, families and groups who are experiencing a variety of psychiatric, medical and social problems to achieve treatment goals. This requires independent judgment and skill in utilizing supportive, problem solving or crisis intervention techniques.

6. Ability to independently provide counseling and/or psychotherapy services to individuals, groups and families. Social workers must practice within the bounds of their license or certification. For example, some states may require social workers providing psychotherapy to have a clinical level of licensure.

7. Ability to provide consultation services to other staff about the psychosocial needs of patients and the impact of psychosocial problems on health care and compliance with treatment. Ability to provide orientation and coaching to new social workers and social work graduate students. Ability to serve as a field instructor for social work graduate students who are completing VHA field placements.

8. Ability to independently evaluate his/her own practice through participation in professional peer review case conferences, research studies, or other organized means.

9. Knowledge and skill in the use of computer software applications for drafting documents, data management, and tracking, especially those programs in use by VHA.

Credentialing & Privileging: Any registered, and certified health care providers appointed to a Veterans Health Administration Medical Center must enter their employment history, education history and all licensure/certification/registration information through the internet-based credentialing system (VetPro). VetPro ensures the consistency of the credentialing process for all employees and provides a reliable electronic data bank of health care provider credentials. This system is used nationwide by all VHA healthcare facilities. Employment commencement dates will be contingent upon the completion and approval of the VetPro credentialing/verification process.

National Service (i.e., volunteer experience):

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
