Job Description
Nurse Manager (SCI/D)

The incumbent of this position will serve as Nurse Manager for the Spinal Cord Injury/Disorder Health Care Group, Carearea Spinal Cord Injury unitat the VA Long Beach Healthcare System in Long Beach, California.The Nurse Manager has 24 hour, 7 day per week responsibility for patient care and satisfaction, and will address difficult and complex issues within the unit, directing only those of the most complex nature to higher level management for adjudication.

The Incumbent will be responsible for the delivery of patient care in assigned areas based on scientific principles and the nursing processes.These responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 1) Provision of outstanding nursing care when needed.2) Supervision of nursing personnel and facilitation of optimal patient care through the use of nursing process on a 24-hour basis. 3) Selecting, mentoring, motivating, rewarding, disciplining and directing the development and evaluation of all assigned staff. 4) Developing and implementing standards, goals, policies, procedures, guidelines, and protocols. 5) Effectively communicating pertinent facility policies, procedures, and standards to staff. 6) Fostering an environment that encourages open communications and collaborative practice. 7) Developing and maintaining Systems Redesign/ Quality Improvement programs that meet Evidence-Based standards consistent with the goals and objectives of the Medicine & Inpatient Health Care Group and the Healthcare system. 8) Assuring compliance with performance measures and all the internal and external standards applied to the areas of assignment. 9) Ensuring the cost-effective use of personnel and material resources facilitating compliance with the healthcare system's financial goals.
We are a 24/7 medical center with various tours of duty and incumbent may be required to work off tours, nights, holidays and/or weekends to meet the mission of caring for the Veterans

Relocation expenses and/or incentives have not been authorized.

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • U.S. citizenship
  • English language proficiency
  • Physical standards - All applicants must meet the physical standards for the position. A physical examination prior to employment may be required.
  • Registration - Current, full, active and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the U.S. or in the District of Columbia. The RN must maintain a current, full active and unrestricted registration to continue employment with the VA
  • Educational requirements can be met as follows:

(1) Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State agency, and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed: a) The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC); or b) The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). OR

(2) The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. OR

(3) In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active, and unrestricted registration, will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

ACLS required.

BSN is required.

The following requirements are preferred for this position:

  • At a minimum, applicants should possess experience as an RN that is determined to be sustained and consistently at or above an acceptable level of quality. This may include experience as a Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) provided that candidate was utilized as a professional nurse and passed the State licensing (board) examination on the first attempt, and experience as Nurse Technician Pending Graduation provided the candidate possessed an active, current registration to practice nursing in a State and was utilized as a professional nurse. Professional nursing experience should be documented on the Application for Employment - Nurse and Nurse Anesthetists (VA Form 10-2850a).

* Master's degree in Nursing (MSN).

* American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) certification.

* 5 years clinical inpatient experience.

* 1 to 2 years of supervisory experience.

Experience in the staffing and financial understanding of the operation.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This position requires periods of standing, walking, and bending. Applicants may be required to lift 20+ pounds, and work extended or off tour hours as needed.
