Job Description
Inventory Management Specialist

Incumbent is responsible for the inventory management and procurement of medical and surgical supplies and equipment. The position requires application of a large body of technical knowledge in forecasting short and long-range inventory needs under constantly changing technological and program requirements. To be considered such factors as usage, essentially, availability of space and budgetary limitations. Analysis of inventory requirements demands a thorough knowledge of procurement procedures, contacts with using services and consults with various users and officials to coordinate and ensure continuous and availability of items. Employee has constant knowledge of all expendable stock supplies to avoid inactive stock and/or long supply, outdated material, cancellations, and backorders. Unique specialized items such as hazardous items, pathology, and laboratory items, and items with short expiration dates are maintained by the employee.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:30am - 4:00pm, Nights and Weekends may be required.

Specialized Experience:

GS-07: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 level in the Federal service which involved controlling and authorizing funding for material so that the proper kind, quality, and quantity are available at the correct time and place; Maintaining records and controls over material in stock, due in, or planned for the distribution system on a quantitative and monetary basis; Controlling the distribution or redistribution of stock within the supply system; and Managing items with difficult supply and demand patterns related to seasonal factors, program changes, changes in end-use applications, and similar elements;

OR One full year of graduate level education, or superior academic achievement master's or equivalent graduate degree.

GS-09: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal service which involved controlling an assigned class of expendable material for a supported catchment area, Making decisions and commitments on medical/surgical supplies that materially affect the health care mission of both inpatients and outpatients, Researching opportunities for and conducting analysis of potential cost savings, efficiencies, and process improvements using quantitative analysis and historical usage patterns, Utilizing performance measures to conduct forecasting and quantitative analysis, Proactively engaging customers to make recommendations for product changes, substitutions, and additions to product lines with a focus on increasing supply economy and efficiency, and Conducting data analysis for acquisition planning associated with DME;

OR Two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a degree.

Combining Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements for the grade levels specified in the table, and may be computed by first determining the applicant's total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; then determining the applicant's education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level; and then adding the two percentages. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for that grade level. Only graduate education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be used to qualify applicants for positions at grades GS-07 and GS-09. (When crediting education that requires specific course work, prorate the number of hours of related courses required as a proportion of the total education to be used.)

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Requirements: The work is mostly administrative in nature. However, walking, carrying, stooping, bending, and reaching are required to carry out the inventorying, receiving, and stocking the areas assigned. The activities can include physical inspection of merchandise received. Incumbent may be required to assist in the actual physical movement of equipment and stock items within the Medical Center and its clinics. .

Time-in-grade: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. For a GS-7 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-5 level.
