Job Description
Housekeeping Aid

You will work as a Housekeeping Aid in the Environmental Care Section of Facilities Management Service, at the VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System in Reno, NV. You will execute a full range of housekeeping activities in your assigned area. Duties include cleaning and protective maintenance of floors, walls, ceilings, windows, furniture, fixtures, sinks, commodes, urinals, bathtubs, showers, and equipment. In your role, you may perform the following duties:

- floor maintenance, wall washing, doors, door frames, baseboard corners, edges, and stairwells;

- sweeping, dust mopping, dam and wet mopping, scrubbing, stripping, refinishing, buffing, vacuuming carpets and carpet runners, spot washing areas, and high and low dusting;

- clean office, lobby, and recreation room furniture following established cyclic cleaning procedures;

- empty trash and waste baskets and replace liners;

- transport general refuse, regulated medical waste and recycling to central collection areas following established procedures for waste management;

- clean restrooms, bathrooms, and shower rooms, ensuring they meet acceptable standards;

- replenish supplies of paper towels, toilet paper, hand sanitizer and soap in all areas where dispensers are located;

- move and arrange furniture, patient wardrobes, beds, etc. in you assigned area;

- provide bed-making services in patient care areas;

- clean mattresses, springs, and bed frames on a regular basis;

- clean bedside stands, over bed lighting, blood pressure cuffs, bed tables, etc. in patient rooms;

- remove bags of soiled linen from patient rooms and transport to the soiled laundry room;

- defrosts and cleans refrigerators and ice machines in nourishment/kitchen areas; and

- perform other duties as needed or assigned.

Work Schedule: Full-time, 40 hours per week, various tours, weekend and/or night shifts

Your background must demonstrateknowledge performing functions of a Housekeeping Aid in specialized areas and wards, following and using the established techniques, duties, functions and procedures without supervision. Examples of duties include using double bucket mopping procedures, dry mopping, scrubbing, waxing and polishing floors using heavy powered scrubbers, buffers and vacuum cleaners/shampooers; dusting, waxing and polishing furniture; moving heavy furniture, supplies and equipment; washing windows, walls, room partitions, ceiling vents and fixtures; emptying ashtrays, wastebaskets and trashcans; utilizing advanced knowledge of hospital sanitation chemicals to resolve unusual cleaning problems; disinfecting and deodorizing restrooms, lavatories, urinals, toilet bowls, floors, etc.; stocking restrooms with adequate supplies such as toilet paper, soap, hand towels, etc.; providing on the job training to new employees; requesting and stocking supplies; practicing safety when operating equipment.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision. Evidencewhich demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume or OF-612.Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C ( www.opm.gov/qualifications/x-118c ).

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the questions. The screen-out element for this position is the ability to do the work of a Housekeeping Aid without more than normal supervision.

JOB ELEMENTS: Those who meet the minimum level of experience and training for the screen-out element will then be evaluated in each of the following job elements:

1. Ability to interpret instructions.
2. Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
3. Ability to operate with dexterity and safety
4. Ability to keep things neat, clean and in order.
5. Ability to handle weights and loads.

PHYSICAL EFFORT/REQUIREMENTS: This position entails prolonged standing, bending, swooping, stretching and lifting. You may be required to lift items up to 40 pounds. You may occasionally be required to work on small step ladders. You may work on hands and knees for some items.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Most work will be done inside a climate controlled hospital building. You will be exposed to odors, blood, and other body fluids and will have potential contact with contagious diseases found in a hospital environment. You will be provided all required PPE necessary and follow Blood Borne Pathogens (BBPs) Guidelines.
