Job Description
Supervisory Medical Supply Technnician

This position serves as a Supervisory Medical Supply Technician within the Sterile Processing Services (SPS) for the James J. Peters VA Medical Center in Bronx, New York.

You will perform duties providing supervisory guidance and direction to Medical Supply Technicians performing the technical work of decontamination and preparation, including reprocessing of Reusable Medical Equipment (RME).

Major Duties and Responsibilities may include (but are not limited to):

  • Leading sound quality and infection control programs, assuring required cultures and tests are performed on all Washers, AER's, Sterrad, and steam sterilizers and that proper packaging, handling, storage and recall procedures are maintained for all sterile items;
  • Maintaining an adequate inventory of instruments and/or implementing alternate plans to locate needed instruments in an emergency and checking surgical schedules for preparation of case carts or special needs for the operating room;
  • Recommending work schedules and sequence of operations to provide an even flow and distribution of work, revising work schedules as needed to meet changes in unpredictable workload.
  • Assigning work to employees to meet the needs of the operation, explaining work requirements, answering special instructions on more difficult tasks and reviewing work while in progress to assess the quality and quantity of performance by each employee;
  • Assisting in giving weekly in-services as they relate to the Preparation and Decontamination;
  • Assisting in job training, advises employees of performance requirements and keeps employees advised of their progress;
  • Implementing provisions of established personnel programs such an equal employment opportunity, career development, safety practice;
  • Evaluating and recommending updates for the Operating Room case cards and tray setup cards to provide the Operating Room and using services with instruments and supplies that are currently required to perform their duties;
  • Assisting with and conducting evaluations of products and equipment; and
  • Adhering to required hospital and OSHA safety, fire, and health requirements and policies.
DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

Work Schedule: 1:00pm to 9:30pm, Monday through Friday.

To qualify for this position, you must meet at least one of the following Minimum Qualifications requirements.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE
One (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-06) in Federal service that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position.

Specialized experience is: Experience processing, assembling, trouble-shooting, preparing, sterilizing, storing, and issuing sterile and unsterile medical supplies, instruments, sets and equipment; Knowledge of the technical names, general uses, physical characteristics, and operating conditions of medical supply items; Knowledge of decontamination, cleaning, preparation, sterilization, and storage procedures; Knowledge of aseptic techniques; and Skill in operating a washer-sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaners, and gas and steam sterilizers

In addition to the above, specialized experience for this particular position must also include leading (or supervising) experience, such as: Advising and recommending to management personnel actions relating to staff; Assisting with and conducting evaluations of products and equipment; and Aiding in the preparation of work measurement studies.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE
Successfully completed one (1) full year of graduate education in a field that is directly related to the work of the Lead Medical Supply Technician position.

One year of full time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the one year of full-time study requirement. Part time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full time study at the school attended. (Transcripts required.)

Equivalent combination of specialized experience and education as described above that demonstrates your ability to perform the duties of the position. (Transcripts required.)

You must be able to push delivery carts weighing in excess or 75-500 pounds. Long periods of standing for observation of employee's work may not be uncommon.

During the course of work assignment, supervising and monitoring the work of employees, you will alternate between a contaminated environment and a controlled clean environment. You will be required to wear special personal protective clothing, such as a gown, cap, shoe covers, gloves, mask and goggles during the performance of duties. These work areas, by their design, are compact and often hot and humid. You will be regularly exposed to heat and chemicals, as well as noise which may necessitate the use of ear plugs. You will be subjected to contamination from accidental punctures, cuts, sprays, burns, chemical contact dermatitis and hazardous gas due to the nature of the work performed.
