Job Description
Recreation Therapist

The Recreation Therapist position is located at the Truman VA Medical Center in Columbia Missouri and is an integral part of the Patient Care Service Line. The incumbent is responsible for developing, organizing and administering Recreation programs to provide therapeutic to patients. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

* Conducts recreation therapy assessments utilizing professionally accepted procedures including structured interview, direct observation, standardized testing and medical record review and documents assessments in the medical record in a timely manner.

* Develops recreation therapy treatment plans to address specific clinical needs identified in the assessment process. Treatment plans will include, but not be limited to; goals, measurable/behavioral objective, therapeutic process (intervention strategies), time frames for achievement and evaluation methodologies.

* Plans, implements and evaluates a wide range of recreation therapy interventions utilizing appropriate modalities to address treatment needs.

* Evaluates patient response to treatment and provides verbal reports to the physician that may have diagnostic or medical significance.

* Develops and submits requests for supplies, equipment, transportation and other support essential to the provision of quality patient treatment in assigned bed section/program.

* Provides supervision and training to Douglass High School Students, recreation therapy interns, Work Study students, Occupational Therapy students, Recreation Therapy Assistant and volunteers.

Work Schedule:Variable day and evening hours to include rotatingweekends.

Basic Education Requirement: When applying for positions with a Basic Education Requirement you MUST provide official or unofficial transcripts that state a degree was conferred in theappropriate field. For this position youmust possess a Bachelor's degree in recreational therapy or in a creative arts therapy field such as art therapy, dance therapy, music therapy, or psychodrama, OR, a major with a therapeutic emphasis or concentration. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED) (Additional transcripts and/or supporting documentation to provide evidence of the therapeutic emphasis or concentration of your education where the major field of study is not readily identified as "therapeutic" MUST BE PROVIDED to meet this requirement).

Specialized Experience: One (1) year of specialized experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of Recreation Therapist, and that is typically in or related to the position. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least GS-9 grade level. Specialized Experience includes: evaluates patients mental, emotional, social, and physical capabilities to determine treatment plans; develops intermediate and long term goals and objectives for each patient and coordinates treatment plans; applies knowledge of medical terminology and implications for therapeutic treatment of various physical and mental/emotional disabilities and illnesses; documents treatment rendered and patient progress in the medical record; and serves as a member of a multidisciplinary treatment team recommending and communicating treatment objectives to patients, family and treatment teams.

Applicants may substitute education for the experience required for the GS-10 level. Applicants must have 2 1/2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in an appropriate subject-matter field with therapeutic emphasis or concentration which provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of this Recreation Therapist position. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED).
OR
Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-10 level. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned. Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-10. For example, an applicant who has 12 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position

NOTE: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Evidence of specialized experience must be supported by detailed documentation on your resume. Also provide work experience information such as hours per week, salary and starting/ending dates of employment.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as standing or walking for prolonged periods of time; frequent bending, reaching, stooping, and stretching to set up and take apart equipment and apparatus; lifting and repositioning patients; and pushing or pulling heavy objects. The work may require specific physical characteristics and abilities such as above-average dexterity to perform intricate therapy procedures.

Time-in-grade: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. For a GS-10 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-9 level.
