Job Description
Staff Nurse (Nurse Educator)

The Nurse Educator reports directly to the Supervisor, Patient & Clinical Education. The Nurse Educator will serve as a content expert in assessing learning needs, developing, implementing, coordinating, maintaining and evaluating programs throughout the facility and Community Based Outpatient Clinics. The incumbent is required to demonstrate the ability to develop and coordinate education programs to improve the quality of care and the organizational process. The incumbent provides consultation to the Healthcare Groups (HCG) and plans, develops, implements, coordinates, maintains and evaluates educational programs/activities to meet their educational needs. Ensures all training activities are based upon assessed learning needs of the HCG, nursing staff and educational priorities identified by the Network, Veteran Health Administration and facility.

The incumbent ensures the developed training programs are aligned with the priorities of the Healthcare System and the Network, and ensures that training activities and products are of high quality, provided in a timely manner, and follow principles of customer service. Additional duties of the position require that the incumbent work effectively with all levels of staff, to include collaborative efforts with other health professionals, providing leadership in improving patient care, and maintaining standards of care. The incumbent will be able to direct and teach personnel in a variety of settings, utilizing adult learning techniques and simulation. The position may entail other educational duties, as assigned and deemed reasonable to accomplish the needs of the facility.

The incumbent develops and maintains excellent working relationships with internal and external customers, and will be expected to qualify for an academic appointment (clinical and teaching). The incumbent will participate in health fairs, educational fairs and facility events to promote Nursing Education. The incumbent will work with assigned inpatient and/or outpatient units to determine Nursing Education learning needs and develop programs to meet these needs. The incumbent will work with external customers and will assist and participate in facility product education.

The incumbent is required to perform statistical reporting, evaluation, consultation and collaboration with other VA health care professionals and administrators. The incumbent must be able to comprehend and maintain knowledge of current VA guidelines, VA directives, policies, Federal regulations, and laws governing the development of programs to meet these needs.

The incumbent must possess effective public speaking skills and the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with a wide variety of individuals and organizations. The incumbent must also be comfortable in the role of administrator, educator, and direct services provider, as the needs of the program require. The incumbent must be capable of providing strong and effective leadership, possess decision making, project management and change concept skills.

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

We are a 24/7 medical center with various tours of duty and incumbent may be required to work off tours, nights, holidays and/or weekends to meet the mission of caring for the Veterans

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • Physical standards - All applicants must meet the physical standards for the position. A physical examination prior to employment may be required.
  • Registration - Current, full, active and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the U.S. or in the District of Columbia. The RN must maintain a current, full active and unrestricted registration to continue employment with the VA
  • Educational requirements can be met as follows:

(1) Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State agency, and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed: a) The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC); or b) The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). OR

(2) The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. OR

(3) In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active, and unrestricted registration, will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

  • Must maintain a full active and unrestricted drivers license and the ability to drive a vehicle.

The following requirements are preferred for this position:

  • At a minimum, applicants should possess experience as an RN that is determined to be sustained and consistently at or above an acceptable level of quality. This may include experience as a Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) provided that candidate was utilized as a professional nurse and passed the State licensing (board) examination on the first attempt, and experience as Nurse Technician Pending Graduation provided the candidate possessed an active, current registration to practice nursing in a State and was utilized as a professional nurse. Professional nursing experience should be documented on the Application for Employment - Nurse and Nurse Anesthetists (VA Form 10-2850a).
  • ANCC certification.
  • ER/ICU/Critical care experience is preferred for this position.
  • Master's degree in Nursing is highly preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Light Lifting, under 15 pounds, light carrying, under 15 pounds, pulling hand over hand 1.5 hours (varies), pushing, 1 hour (varies), reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, walking (12 hours-varies), Standing (12 hours-varies), repeated bending (4 hours varies), climbing, legs only (.2 hours-varies), both legs required (prosthetics OK), ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, near vision correctable at 12" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4, must have good vision in one eye. Hearing (aid permitted).
