Job Description
Advanced Medical Support Assistant - Caregiver Support/Home Based Primary Care

This position serves as a Medical Support Assistant (MSA) to the Geriatric and Extended Care (GEC) Caregiver Support program and the Home Based Primary Care (HBPC) program at the Bath VA Medical Center in Bath, NY. Duties include the following:

  • Provide a full range of administrative and clerical support to the Caregiver Support program and Home Based Primary Care (HBPC) program
  • Schedule Caregiver Support visits and HBPC appointments.
  • Maintain the Electronic Wait List for HBPC and extended care contract programs.
  • Performreceptionist duties, customer service, and other duties to ensure optimal administrative operations.
  • Ensure that health records are appropriately filed and scanned into electronic record systems.
  • Screen/receive phone calls and visitors in a courteous and timely manner, determine the nature of requests, and respond to queries.
  • Maintains effective and efficient communication with patients, caregivers, family, the interdisciplinary team, and other agencies.
  • Act as the alternate timekeeper for assigned departments.
  • Serve as a recorder for the Caregiver Advisory Council, HBPC Interdisciplinary Treatment Team, and other committees.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM

Basic Requirements:

  • U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-5). Qualifying experience includes:scheduling, canceling, re-scheduling patient's appointments and/or consults; entering no-show information; monitoring electronic wait lists and appointments; preparing for clinic visits; and processing transfer to other medical facilities. Experience must be in a clinical setting.


Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Grade Determinations: For GS-6, one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-5).
