Job Description
Social Worker - Suicide Prevention Coordinator

The Suicide Prevention Coordinator (SPC) Social Worker functions as the coordinator of care for Veterans at suicide risk receiving care through the Battle Creek VA Medical. The SPC services theas an advisor to theAssociate Chief of Staff for Mental Health, Mental Health Service Chiefs, facility leadership, program managers and other medical center staff concerning suicide prevention strategies for individual patients, for the facility and or the Veteran community as a whole in conjunction with the SPC at the Wyoming Health Care Center.As the Suicide Prevention Coordinator your duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Tracking all suicide attempts and Veterans with serious suicide ideation at each facility through the use of the "Suicide Behavior Report" note.
  • Together with the Suicide Prevention Care Manager, assuring that all Veterans on the facility tracking list are being followed closely by the appropriate provider on a regular basis as determined by the coordinator and the provider.
  • Tracking any no-show appointments by these Veterans and following up with the Veteran as soon as possible to reschedule the appointment.
  • Disseminating, organizing, and where possible, conducting evidence-based and promising, emerging interventions trainings.
  • Obtaining any relevant HIPAA clearances to allow transmittal of facility data on suicide attempts and individuals at risk to the VISN 19 MIRECC for trending quality assurance purposes; and transmitting the data following cyber security requirements as applicable for this sensitive data.
  • Assuring that Veterans and community stakeholders have access to the 24-hour resource number to get assistant if an immediate crisis should occur.
  • Providing ongoing Operation S.A.V.E. training with both clinical and non-clinical (e.g. clerks and telephone operators) front line staff to be prepared to assist Veterans with whom they come in contact during crisis situations.
  • Working withcommunity resources such as VSO's and other community groups to assure that they are aware of how to recognize Veterans at risk for suicide and their options for getting these Veterans assistance.
  • Developing and implementing an ongoing education plan for providers, Veterans, families, and members of the community on risk factors and warning signs for suicide, and treatment options.
  • SPCs will participate in training activities and scheduled conference calls as required by the VACO Office of Mental Health Services.

The incumbent in this position will not be required to file a financial disclosure report.

Work Schedule: While the administrative tour for this position is Monday - Friday; 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, the nature of the role may require being available for emergent situations on evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Basic Requirements:

  • U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education. Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement untilthe school of social work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the mater's degree insocial work.
  • Licensure. Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level.
  • Physical Requirements.
  • English Language Proficiency. Social workers must be proficient in spoken and written English

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Grade Determinations:

GS-12 Social Worker Program Coordinators and Manager

Experience, Education and Licensure. Individuals assigned as social worker program coordinator or manager must be licensedor certified at the advanced practice level. Their experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills and judgment, demonstrating progressively more professional competency. They may have certification or other post-master's degree training a from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship, or equivalent supervised professional experience.

In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the professional KSAs below:

  1. In-depth knowledge of the program coordinated, and demonstrated knowledge and ability to write policies, procedure, and/or practice guidelines for the program.
  2. Knowledge and skill in management/administration, which includes supervision, consultation, negotiation, and monitoring.
  3. Ability to supervise multidisciplinary staff assigned to the program.
  4. Ability to organize work, set priorities, meet multiple deadlines, and evaluate assigned program areas(s).
  5. Ability to provide training, orientation, consultation, and guidance within clinical specialization of practice.
Physical Requirements: Walking; standing; use of both fingers; operation of a crane, truck, tractor, or motor vehicle, near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; hearing (aid permitted); mental and emotional stability.
