NURSE PRACTITIONER (MENTAL HEALTH SPECIALTY)

HIBBING VA OUTPATIENT CLINIC

FULL-TIME, MONDAY-FRIDAY

The Minneapolis VA Health Care System is seeking an outstanding Nurse Practitioner to join our interdisciplinary treatment team at the Hibbing Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC). He/she will provide comprehensive mental health care and crisis management to our veteran patients. Common mental health diagnoses include schizophrenia; anxiety disorders; trauma related disorders such as PTSD; depressive disorders; bipolar disorders; cognitive disorders related to TBI; neurocognitive disorders such as Alzheimer's disease; substance abuse disorders; and neurodevelopmental disorders such as ADHD.

Key duties:

* Conduct and document findings on initial, periodic, episodic, and/or psychiatric examinations on patients seen in the clinical setting.

* Determine appropriate diagnosis and formulate diagnostic plans and therapeutic regimen, including possible hospitalizations. Collaborate with collaborating physician or other allied health care professionals as needed.

* Determine potential needs for therapeutic changes, diagnostic workups or subspecialty consultation and so order.

* Provide follow-up for evaluation of outcomes of laboratory tests. Detect and evaluate any significant change in patients' psychiatric condition, treating as indicated.

* Make practice decisions autonomously and/or in consultation with physician(s) and health care professional(s), in a collegial relationship for mutual consultation and referral. The APRN is responsible and accountable for own actions.

* Collaborate with the patient/family to establish physical, mental, cultural and environmental factors that facilitate or impede realistic goals and activities.

* Prescribe, administer and review/evaluate patient's response to pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment.

* Evaluate outpatients and manage acute and chronic mental illnesses per the usual scope of care to include attention to maintenance of stable conditions, preventive health care and screening. Collaborate with collaborating physician or other allied health care professionals as needed.

* Provide education and counseling of the patient and the patient's family in preventive care, psychiatric conditions and the use of prescribed treatments and drugs. Maintain phone contact with patients, families and home care agencies as indicated.

* Serve as a mentor, consultant and coordinator for nurses and other health care professionals.

* Exhibit leadership in initiating changes in patient care programs based on current concepts and findings from research and/or studies

APRNState Licensure and Psychiatric-Mental Health NP Certification required

Work Schedule: Clinic hours of operation are Monday - Friday 8:00a.m.- 4:30p.m (This position requires the NP to be physically located at the clinic)

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
  • U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Full unrestricted Licensure, Certification, or Registration required
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
    • The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

Grade Determinations:
The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:

  • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience.

Education/Experience Requirements: A nurse practitioner must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a State, possess a master's degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE, and maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body.The certification must be in the specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Requirements: In accordance with HRML No. 05-12-02, Employment of People with Disabilities, Including Under Schedule A, 5 CFR 213.3102 (u). Requirements include:
