Job Description
Registered Nurse (Emergency Department)
  • As a Registered Nurse (RN) in the emergency department, the incumbent will be responsible for providing comprehensive, high quality, cost effective healthcare services to our Veteran patients who present for emergency care.
    Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

1.Provides comprehensive nursing care to patients in the Emergency Department. Documents observations, assessment, and changes in patient's condition

2. Collaborates with interdisciplinary team members to facilitate positive patient care outcomes.

3. Demonstrates effective communication skills with patients, families, visitors and members of the interdisciplinary team.

4. Adheres to established policies, directives, and emergency department standards of care, and nursing protocols.

5. Ensures that patients receive thorough education and instructions related to care and treatment performed during their emergency department visit.

6. Administers a variety of treatment modalities, including but not limited to oxygen, immunizations, IV fluid, blood transfusions and prescribed oral, subcutaneous, Intravenous and intramuscular medications. Sets up, operates and monitors specialized equipment.

7. Incumbent must have physical capabilities to initiate crisis intervention measures and the ability and knowledge to perform in nursing care emergencies.

This Staff Nurse is administratively accountable to the Nurse Manager, Emergency Department.

Work Schedule: Full timeDay/Night and Day/ Evening Rotation to include weekends and holidays. Management reserves the right to determine and/or change tour of duty.

Basic Requirements:

* U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

* Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: TheAccreditation Commission for Education in Nursing(ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

* The completion of course work equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along

with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6).

* Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

* Must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:

* Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.

* Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.

* Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.

* Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.

* Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience.

Preferred Experience:Minimum oftwo (2) years of recent, full time clinical experience as a RN inEmergency Department or Intensive Care Unit (ICU) strongly preferred.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

BLS/ACLS Requirements: Current certification in BLS is required for all staff providing direct patient care, and police. Additionally, current ACLS is required for patient care staff that work in specified or high risk areas (SICU/ICU/CCU/MICU/PACU/ED/and all procedure suites using moderate sedation, etc.). If you are selected for a position which requires BLS/ACLS certification, you will be required to have proof of certification prior to being boarded for appointment with VA. If selected, obtain such certification in order to avoid any delays in the hiring process.

In addition, if you have or had service in a Federal Law Enforcement position covered by law enforcement or firefighter retirement provisions, including early or mandatory retirement, the SF-50 must show the retirement code. An award SF-50 does not contain the required information.
  5. Candidates should submit a copy of their two most recent performance appraisal.
  6. Copies of college transcript(s) (Official copy will be required for appointment if selected).
  7. Current copies of all licensures and certifications.
  8. Any other documentation of education/awards/training, etc. which would enhance your qualifications for this position.
