Job Description
Housekeeping Aid Supervisor

This position is located in the Environmental Management Service (EMS) at the Bath VA Medical Center in Bath, New York. Duties include the following:

  • Supervise activities of Housekeeping Aids in performing such duties as power scrubbing of floors, floor finish removal and reapplication, dusting and polishing floors, furniture sweeping, mopping, washing interior windows and fixtures, washing walls, ceilings, furniture and draperies, cleaning patient bed and discharge units.
  • Assure the accomplishment of EMS services (environmental sanitation, linen distribution, maintenance, reporting informational graphic needs and repairs, etc.) in assigned areas of the facility.
  • Develop and direct formal on-the-job training programs for subordinates and operating personnel in methods and procedures, aseptic techniques and sanitation, security and safety.
  • Participate in regularly scheduled in-service meeting for all operating personnel, communicating to employees the latest developments in areas of sanitation, laundry operation, pest control, interior design, and interpreting both station policy and VA directives.
  • Complete time and attendance records, as well as leave requests.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidencewhich demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume or OF-612.Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C ( www.opm.gov/qualifications/x-118c ).

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the questions. The screen-out element for this position is Ability to lead or supervise.

JOB ELEMENTS: Those who meet the minimum level of experience and training for the screen-out element will then be evaluated in each of the following job elements:

  1. Ability to inspect work of subordinates
  2. Work practices (keeping work areas clean, neat, and in order)
  3. Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc.
  4. Ability to sue/maintain tools/equipment
  5. Ability to work with dexterity and safety in mind

PHYSICAL EFFORT/REQUIREMENTS:Physical effort and work conditions: You will move and control heavy equipment and carry and set up ladders. You will frequently lift and move objects weighing over 50 pounds. Care is required to avoid serious injuries when working on ladders and when using heavy powered equipment.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Usually works indoors in areas which normally have adequate heat, light, and ventilation's. Will be exposed to vibration from heavy equipment and to skin irritations from strong cleaning solutions used in stripping floors, etc., as well as subject to cuts and bruises. Continually exposed to dust, dirt, and disagreeable odors, and is frequently exposed to organic material which may be contaminated and/or infectious and require special handling.
