Job Description
Interior Designer

This position is for an Interior Designer for the VA Puget Sound Healthcare System (VAPSHCS) and is assigned to the Planning and Activations section of the Facilities Management Service Line, Tacoma, WA. The incumbent serves as a consultant for all services within the two Medical Centers, offsite lease properties, Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs), contracted clinics, transitional housing and Vet Centers.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Develops and implements standardized color schemes, themes, and signage.
Develops, maintain and implement the interior design three-year plan by establishing priorities and developing short-term and long-term interior improvement projects.
Prepares design layouts using MS Visio or AutoCad.
Develops in-house designs and review work of outside design firms to ensure barrier
free design.
Develops and administer health care space planning using patient centered care principles and industry and Joint Commission standards.
Prepares reports and presentations using MS Word and PowerPoint.
Administers contract for moving and storage services and oversees all moves.
Performs other duties assigned as it relates to the position.


Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

TO QUALIFY FOR THIS POSITION YOU MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: At least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-09) in the Federal Service that equipped me with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of an Interior Designer. Specialized experience is experience concerned with the design and alteration of interior spaces to meet functional and aesthetic needs such as: (1) Identifying, researching, and creatively solving problems pertaining to the function and quality of the interior environment; (2) Performing services relative to interior spaces, including programming, design analysis, space planning and aesthetics, using specialized knowledge of interior construction, building systems and components, building codes, equipment, materials, and furnishings; (3) Preparing drawings and documents relative to the design of interior spaces in order to enhance and protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public; (4) Coordinating and integrating the mechanical, electrical, and structural engineering disciplines within the interior context; (5) Managing projects, developing cost estimates, reviewing construction documents, participating in on-site construction visits, conducting pre- and post-occupancy evaluations, developing standards for efficient space management, etc.
Specialized experience specific to this position at the GS-11 level is using design software applications related to design layout such as AutoCAD, VISIO, etc., assisting in the development of cost estimates, design budget, verification of financial obligations, reconciling transactions, and balancing budget resources; coordinating activities with other programs such as using multiple criteria to determine design selections (i.e., durability and maintainability, infection control, function and efficiency), the placement of furnishings, construction methods, and contractual sources; establishing and/or periodically updating a resource library of furnishings, office furniture, floor coverings, finishes, colors, fabrics, etc. from vendors and suppliers; and having excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: Successfully completed a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree OR three (3) full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree. Education must include a major study in interior design or another field that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in interior design, interior architecture, or interior environmental design. NOTE: Transcripts must be submitted with application. Education cannot be credited without documentation.
OR
COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: Equivalent combination of creditable specialized experience and graduate level education (beyond the second year) as described above to meet the total requirements for the position. NOTE: Transcripts must be submitted with application. Education cannot be credited without documentation.

You will be rated on the following Competencies as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. At times the employee will be required to stand long periods of time, walk a a lot, stoop, bend, climb, crawl, work in cramped and awkward positions. Employee must have good eyesight, depth and color perception. Work is typically performed in an adequately lighted and climate controlled office.
