Job Description
Security Assistant (Dispatcher)

This position is located in the Police Department at the Bath VA Medical Center in Bath, NY. The Dispatcher carries out a variety of telecommunication and dispatching under both normal and emergency conditions for the Medical Center. The position also provides Security Assistant support to the Chief of Police. Duties include the following:

  • Monitor and answer routine and emergency telephones.
  • Initiate appropriate action based on incident type and importance.
  • Dispatch Police and Fire services or other personnel in emergency situations.
  • Monitor Security Surveillance Television (SSTV) systems, alarms, and physical access control systems.
  • Maintain daily operations journals, logs, and records.
  • Collect, organize, and track information in support of the physical security and law enforcement programs.
  • Develop and maintain program statistics, reports, and other materials to forecast potential vulnerabilities.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Note:All Dispatchers must complete a one-week certified training at the Law Enforcement Training Center in Little Rock, Arkansas within one year of employment.

Work Schedule: Intermittent; may include weekends and holidays.

Specialized Experience:

Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-04) of this occupation. Examples of specialized experience include performing dispatch duties for law enforcement

or security, monitoring SSTV and security systems, and providing related administrative support for security operations.

OR

Applicants may substituteaBachelor's degree (in any field)for the experience required for the GS-05 level.

OR

Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-05 level. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-05. For example, an applicant who has30 semester hours of junior or senior-level undergraduate education (i.e. 50% of undergraduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position.

A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Requirements: The work is primarily sedentary. However, there may be some walking, standing, bending, carrying of light items such as papers, books, small parts, or driving an automobile. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.

Time-in-grade: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. For a GS-05 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-04 level.
