Job Description
Medical Supply Technician

The Medical Supply Technician within Sterile Processing Service (SPS) performs duties relative to the collection, decontamination, high level disinfection, instrument preparation, inspection, packaging and sterilization of reusable medical supplies, instruments, equipment and apparatus.

* Requires extensive knowledge of the complete range of surgical instrumentation, surgical tray assemblies, clinic trays and manufacturer's requirements for cleaning, assembly and sterilization, reusable medical supplies, and patient care equipment.

* Operates sophisticated microprocessor decontamination and sterilization equipment.

* Operates all decontamination equipment in special area receiving items soiled with tissue, blood and body fluids and otherwise contaminated material.

* Identifies and receives contaminated surgical instrument sets, clinic trays, ward trays, endoscopic equipment,saws, drills and a variety of other items and devices from all areas in the medical center while prioritizing instruments and sets needed for surgery and clinics.

* Assembles instruments, complex instrument sets, and other surgical items and kits by selecting the appropriate items, trays, instruments and arranging them in the correct manner to insure appropriate sterilization and/or disinfection.

* Assembles complex instrument sets containing as many as 200 varied instruments which must be inspected for damage such as pitting, rust, cracks, sharpness, proper locking ability, jaw alignment, residual blood and tissue, etc..

* Performs individual recognition of thousands of various instruments and is able to properly arrange them in a set to allow for sterilization, aseptic retrieval and arrangements, which allow for surgical use according to the sequence of events during a surgical procedure.

* Processes even the most complicated procedural sets containing unusual and minutely varied instrumentation such as the Fem Pop Vascular tray {200 instruments), Bookwalter Retractor Tray and Eye Trays needing magnifying glasses to inspect the minute tips.

* Efficiently schedules operation of sterilizers to permit cooling of sterilized items prior to use by wards, clinic services, or the operating room.

* Reviews, and signs, all sterilizer recording charts to verify the proper sterilization time, temperature, pressure, humidity, and sterilant exposure

Time-in-grade: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. They must have held the GS- 5 grade level or higher for at least one year in order to meet this requirement for the GS- 6 level of this vacancy. The grade may have been in any occupation but must have been held in the Federal service.

Specialized Experience:

Applicants must possess (1) year of specialized experience that equipped them with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) needed to successfully perform the duties of the position and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-5 level in Federal service. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: experience in processing, assembling, trouble-shooting, preparing, sterilizing, storing, and issuing sterile and unsterile medical supplies and equipment. The applicant must possess knowledge of the technical names, general uses, physical characteristics, and operating conditions of medical supply items; knowledge of decontamination, cleaning, preparation, sterilization, and storage procedures; knowledge of aseptic techniques; and skill in operating a washer-sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaners, andsterrad and steam sterilizers. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work as an operating room technician, medical instrument technician, nursing assistant, corpsman, or laboratory worker.

A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Preferred Experience: Previous experience in decontamination of various medical instruments, high level disinfection and sterilization.

Physical Requirements: The incumbent usually stands and moves from one part of the room to another while performing duties. He/she is frequently required to lift packages weighing up to 50 pounds and regularly pushes carts weighing up to 300 pounds for extended distances. He/she is also required to travel throughout the medical center making pickups and deliveries. There is frequent requirement for lifting baskets and instrument sets/containers from knee to chest level and place on shelving above head. Dexterity and strength are required in lifting and positioning baskets and instrument sets/containers weighing over ten pounds overhead. Regularly pushes carts weighing up to 600 pounds for distances up to 2640 feet
