Job Description
PHYSICIAN (OPHTHALMOLOGY)

The Department of Surgery is seeking a Board eligible/Board certified Ophthalmologist to serve as a staff Ophthalmologist in the Eye Department. This includes clinic staffing, scheduling, efficiency and productivity. It also includes responsibility for all aspects of operative care including efficiency, productivity and quality management. Clinical practice of comprehensive ophthalmology will be expected. Training and experience in glaucoma care would be advantageous.
Ensure VA directives and policies are in place and followed; assist in reducing the surgical and electronic wait lists for the facility, assist in administrative duties, as assigned; and assist in other needs of the facility as requested and commensurate with training and skills. Teaching and supervision experience of Medical Student/Residents. Academic appointment and participation in academic programs related to the ophthalmology residency at our adjacent university affiliate is expected.

Basic Requirements:
  • Citizenship of the United States. Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with Department of Veterans Affairs policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Physical requirements outlined below.

Preferred Experience:

Board certified/board eligible in Ophthalmology.
Residency - Completion of a fully accredited US residency program in Ophthalmology, with or without additional fellowship training.
Minimum two years' experience as an Ophthalmologist in a teaching environment.
Glaucoma fellowship trained or proficiency in glaucoma surgeries to include trabeculectomy, canaloplasty and tube shunt procedures preferred.
Previous clinical management experience.
Excellent surgical skills are required for primarily cataract surgery and laser surgery.
Specialty interest in other surgical procedures is encouraged but not required.

Training and Experience in glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmology or strabismus is highly desirable.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Requirements:?, This is a direct patient care position and may require long hours of standing, walking, stooping, bending, lifting and positioning patients for examinations. There may also be extended periods of time sitting at a computer entering patient data.
