The HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN) is the world’s largest publicly funded multi-disciplinary international collaboration facilitating the development of vaccines to prevent HIV/AIDS. The HVTN conducts all phases of clinical trials, from evaluating experimental vaccines for safety and immunogenicity to testing vaccine efficacy.
The HVTN Director of Communications and Community Engagement is responsible for network communications including media relations, digital and social media, brand and messaging, and community relations. The incumbent will work closely with leadership to develop a robust communication strategy and plan, to advance the mission of the HVTN, enhance our advocacy efforts, and provide oversight in in support of participant recruitment into HVTN clinical trials.
The incumbent will direct the communications and community engagement programs for HIV Vaccine Trials Network sites in the United States and internationally, leading a team that supports over 50 clinical research sites. This includes the development and implementation of national, international and internet-based strategies, and other relevant constituencies about HIV vaccine development and HIV prevention trials. The HVTN Director of Communications and Community Engagement will present aspects of the HVTN scientific agenda to relevant audiences, and will develop and implement a communications strategy to promote the HVTN mission toward the development of a safe and effective HIV vaccine.
The HVTN Director of Communication and Community Engagement determines job requirements for team members, identifies resources for department, develops budgets, works closely with other HVTN departments, and may serve on respective protocol team. This position reports to the HVTN Senior Director of Operations and Finance.
- Design and implement a Network communications strategy with measureable goals and timelines in collaboration with HVTN Leadership.
- Participate on all communications working groups including those coordinated by AVAC, the Vaccine Enterprise, and the Office of HIV/AIDS Network Coordination (HANC).
- Co-chair Communications Working Groups as appropriate.
- Manage communication needs within HVTN Core in collaboration with HVTN Executive Management Team and other Directors to include: setting communication priorities, coordinating key messaging, and allocating resources to ensure collateral materials are delivered on time with consistent branding
- Create written communications as needed such as annual reports to Funders, grant applications, press releases, content for community newsletters, etc. and support other HVTN Core staff in creating similar content, as appropriate
- Manage a staff of three communications specialists: 2 Graphic Designers, and a Communications and Marketing Web Specialist.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Represent Network community and communications concerns at national and international conferences as required
- Manage a staff of four site Community Engagement Project Managers working with all domestic and international sites, 2 based in Seattle and 2 based in South Africa.
- Ensure the submission and evaluation of Annual Community Engagement Plans from each CTU with measurable goals that support Network Evaluation metrics including community advisory board training and participation, community engagement, recruitment and retention.
- Ensure solicitation of community concerns and plans to address them at all stages of the scientific agenda from concept development through eventual trial results dissemination.
- Ensure function of community advisory boards at all CTUs, inclusion and support of CAB members on all protocol teams and Network committees, and full representation of the community in all Network operations as outlined in the standards of Good Participatory Practice.
- Manage contracts with external Communication service providers as needed to accomplish goals, e.g. web site developers or PR firms
- Manage the HVTN presence at scientific meetings and conferences, including but not limited to exhibit booths, print materials, and giveaway items
- Other duties as assigned.
- Master’s degree or equivalent in public health, health education, health promotion, community development or communications, or professional degree in related field.
- Superior written and oral communications and presentation skills, including PowerPoint
- 3 years supervisory experience
- High-level understanding of social media landscape and best practices for large organizations using social media.
- Demonstrated ability to lead a diverse team of professionals, work with diverse communities and exhibit cultural responsiveness.
- Ability to manage multiple projects with concurrent and/or competing deadlines efficiently, and communicate effectively with professional, clinical and lay audiences.
- Ability to seek consensus and manage expectations when community concerns do not align with Network objectives or its scientific agenda
- Experience with recruitment for prevention clinical trials and/or clinical trial education.
- Experience working in a global network with off-site collaborators preferred
- Background in HIV/AIDS prevention.
- Work with populations at risk for HIV infection
