Job Description
Public Affairs Specialist

The incumbent provides the full range of administrative, programmatic and technical responsibilities associated with the role of Public AffairsSpecialist in a highly-affiliated health care facility with sophisticated patient care, education and research missions.
*Serves as the primary hospital spokesperson in relation to the requests from local and regional news media with the full range of authority and responsibility for official hospital statements/positions.
*Provides leadership and direction for the Public Affairs program atthe Mountain Home VA Healthcare Systemwhile displaying tact, common sense, diplomacy, initiative, and solid professional judgment.
*Increases internal and external awareness of VA programs, services, special events and projects, technologies, personnel, and research accomplishments.
*Establishes and maintains proactive contacts with media outlets, legislative offices, Veteran service organizations, and health care affiliates.
*Manages media relations activities as facility spokesperson, writing/distributing news media releases and coordinating contacts/interviews between facility personnel and news media.
*Coordinates speaking engagements by facility personnel, conducts facility tours and participates in outreach activities.
*Develops communication plans for facility activities, initiatives and projects.
*Manages content of facility website and SharePoint along with social media applications.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:45am - 4:30pm

Time-in-grade: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements For a GS-13 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-12 level.

Specialized Experience:Applicants must have One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-12) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples would be working in a public affairs program in a health care field.

There is no educational substitution for the GS-13 level.

Preferred Experience:

(1) VA experience

(2) Public Affairs experience

(3) Public Affairs or Marketing Degree

(4) Knowledge of/familiarity with our local community

Physical Requirements: Work is performed sitting at a desk, in a news conferences, briefings, meetings, etc.; or riding in an automobile or public transportation. There may be occasional brief visits to industrial or construction sites, national parks or forests, military equipment test sites, etc.; however, no special physical demands are involved in performing the work.
